Kids' birthday invitations are read mostly by parents, not children. That single fact reshapes the entire wording: the warmth and fun should land for the child, but every practical detail — start time, end time, food, allergies, drop-off vs stay, parking — has to be unmissable for the parent skimming on their phone at school pick-up.

Below are wording samples for every kind of kids' party (first birthday through tween), alongside the small details that quietly save you a week of follow-up texts.

Six details every parent needs in plain sight

  • Start time and end time — never just start time.
  • Whether food is provided, and what kind (cake only? lunch? party food?).
  • Whether parents stay or drop off.
  • Allergy notes (especially nuts, dairy, gluten) and whether the venue can accommodate dietaries.
  • Dress code if relevant (swimwear, fancy dress, layers for outdoor).
  • RSVP-by date — ideally 7 to 10 days before, with one parent's name and contact for follow-up.

Wording samples by age

First birthday
Lina is turning one. Join us for cake, balloons and a long lunch. Saturday 12 October, 11am to 2pm. 14 Sycamore Street. No gifts required — just bring an appetite. RSVP to Mum (Emma) via the link by 5 October.

Best for: First birthdays where the day really is for the parents too.

Park birthday for a five-year-old
Lucy is turning five — and we're celebrating at the park! Saturday 3 August, 10am to 12pm. Picnic shelter, Edinburgh Gardens. Sausages, fruit and cake provided. Parents please stay. RSVP to Mum (Emma) by 27 July. No nuts in the lunchbox please — Lucy's friend Theo has a serious allergy.

Best for: Outdoor park parties with a clear two-hour window and explicit allergy note.

Soft-play birthday for a seven-year-old
Bouncing into seven! Come celebrate Max at the play centre. Sunday 11 May, 11am to 1pm. Little Wonders Play Centre, Brunswick. Lunch and cake provided. Drop-off welcome. RSVP to Mum (Sarah) by 4 May. Please flag any dietaries.

Best for: Older kids' venue parties with drop-off-friendly logistics.

Swim party
Splash, swim, cake! Come celebrate Ari turning eight at the pool. Saturday 18 January, 2pm to 4pm. Northcote Aquatic Centre. Swimwear and a towel — we'll have cake under the marquee at 3.30pm. Parents please stay. RSVP by 11 January.

Best for: Pool parties where safety supervision is part of the format.

Tween sleepover
Eleven, finally. Sophia is having a small sleepover to celebrate. Saturday 14 June, from 5pm — pick up Sunday morning at 10am. 9 Linden Avenue. Dinner, breakfast and a movie provided. Bring a sleeping bag and pyjamas. RSVP to Mum (Hannah) by 7 June.

Best for: Older kids' intimate sleepovers with a clear pick-up time.

Allergy and dietary wording that works

If a child at the party has a serious allergy, the invitation is the place to say so plainly. ‘Please don't bring nut-based snacks — one of our friends has a serious allergy' lands warmly and gives parents time to plan. Availi's custom RSVP questions also let you ask every parent for dietary information directly, so you can plan party food without a separate text-chain.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting the end time. Parents need to plan pick-up.
  • Not specifying drop-off vs stay. Default to making it clear in one short line.
  • Burying the contact parent. ‘RSVP to Mum (Emma) via the link' is the standard format.
  • Asking for ‘no gifts please' without offering an alternative if you'd rather guests contribute something. A book-for-the-library shower works just as well at kids' parties.
  • Sending too late. Two to three weeks ahead is the minimum.
